Change is on the Horizon for NID

On May 29, 2020, NID's General Manager (GM) Remleh Scherzinger announced his resignation. Read his full statement, published in Yubanet, here. The next day, Truckee-Donner Public Utility District announced that he would serve as their new General Manager. Mr. Scherzinger's last day at NID will be July 11, 2020.

In response, NID announced the formation of an ad hoc Committee to appoint an interim GM by June 11, 2020 and help search for a permanent GM. The GM is the key leadership position at NID, second only to the Board Directors. SYRCL looks forward to hearing more about this transition and wishes NID the best in their search.

Three Important NID Meetings

There are three key NID meetings this week for Dam Watchdogs.

The first is the *virtual* NID Engineering Committee meeting tomorrow, Tuesday June 9th at 9 a.m. The Committee will review the second quarterly report for the Centennial Dam project in 2020. SYRCL was pleased to see that the report showed a recent reduction in spending on the Project, due to COVID-19 impacts and a recent transfer of money from the Centennial budget to the Hemphill Fish Passage Improvement Project. Additional interesting items to be reviewed are the District's Reservoir Capacity Study and the draft Capital Improvement Plan. Both items will help the District understand their surface water storage capacity and know which Capital Improvement Projects to prioritize.

  • When: Tuesday, June 9, 2020 9 a.m.
  • Where: Zoom Video Meeting; or (669) 900-6833 or (346) 248-7799 or (253) 215 8782
  • Meeting ID #: 811 8959 5684

The second meeting this week is the *virtual* NID Board Meeting this Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at 9 a.m. The Board will review their quarterly financial reports, which is important to understand given NID's recent financial limitations, COVID-19 impacts and how they should prioritize fiscal responsibility for the District moving forward. NID is also due to re-convene the Water Rates Committee to begin the water rates setting process this month. Learn more here

  • When: Wednesday, June 10, 2020 9 a.m.
  • Where: Zoom Video Meeting; or (669) 900-6833 or (346) 248-7799 or (253) 215 8782
  • Meeting ID #: 827 5776 1358

Finally, the third meeting is the NID/PCWA Water Committee meetingthe quarterly convening between NID and Placer County Water Agency this Thursday, June 11, 2020 at 9 a.m. Key items to be reviewed include NID's sphere of influence and key joint infrastructure projects. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be a way for the public to participate remotely. SYRCL is disappointed by this lack of transparency, especially with our communities still feeling the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • When: Thursday, June 11, 2020 9 a.m.
  • Where: Only In-Person MeetingPlacer County Water Agency American River Room 144 Ferguson Road Auburn, California

SYRCL looks forward to a possible teleconference for the NID/PCWA meeting, and to learning more about all these priority issues.

Have questions? Join us this week at all three meetings Tuesday, Wednesday, and (hopefully) Thursday at 9 a.m.

SYRCL's Statement of Solidarity

We are deeply troubled by what is unfolding in this moment within our country and around the world. Our hearts are heavy with the grief, anger, fear, and violence from the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery and the life-threatening 911 call made on Chris Cooper while bird watching. We acknowledge these are only the most recent in a litany of violent offenses against black people. We are among the many that are grappling with this pain and loss in the midst of rampant unrest and a global pandemic.

As a community organization, we commit ourselves to do more to combat racism in all its forms and stand in solidarity with the black community and all people of color. We pledge to listen to, and amplify, the voices that are being silenced and those suffering injustice. We recognize that we have a lot to learn but are committed to strive for justice and to experience the discomfort that comes with acknowledging the painful truths of white privilege. We also recognize that racism in our community and society is a direct threat to environmental progress, and we cannot fulfill our mission to “unite the community” while racism continues to divide us.

SYRCL holds dear the value that “People Can Save a River.” This founding premise inspires, empowers, and emboldens us to take collective action against threats to the Yuba’s waters and ecosystems. Racism is a direct threat to our community and the Yuba River watershed, and our organization will strive to unite all people to take collective action.
